Cupids - Glasgow - Nice N Sleazy - Sunday 11 October 2015

Since catching the Gramotones supporting Steve Cradock a few years back I have been digging on their tunes and it came as something of surprise when I heard earlier in the year they were freshening things up and would be known as Cupids going forward. With the old line-up of Jake, Sid, Ryan and James all still present I was keen to hear if the sound of Cupids would differ to that of Gramotones and having not heard the lads live for over a year this was a gig I was going to enjoy regardless.

Prior to the main act, support came in the form of solo artist Will Leatherbarrow (surely his Gunslinger name) and The Dead Settlers. Indeed with names like these one could be forgiven for thinking this was a Sunday night line-dancing club. Thankfully, the music and tunes on offer impressed with Leatherbarrow (did I really just type that again) drawing applause (not bullets) with some tunes from his latest EP Sink. The Dead Settlers followed and despite not knowing any of their tunes I enjoyed the tracks on offer.

With early curfews now the norm, Cupids took to the stage around 10. Currently touring with Blossoms, the band launched into their set with a track called ‘Horror’. Perhaps it was just the venue (or refreshments consumed) but the sound appeared a little different with a grittier and rockier edge to it that I had not picked up on in the past. The chemistry between the tight four-piece has always impressed and it was once again evident with Jake, Sid and Ryan commanding the stage with James smashing his kit in the background.  It is not just the name that has changed with many of the old Gramotones tunes no longer present in the set, not that this was an issue as the songs on offer were top drawer with debut Cupids track ‘A Study In Extremes’ being a stand-out and reminding me somewhat of early Crowded House/Split Enz material. ‘Corporate Whipping Boy’ closed the set out and left the crowd panting like a dog in heat for more of the same.
