John Power - Glasgow - Pivo Pivo - Friday December 6 2013
Local band Point Blank were given the honour of opening-up for John Power and did a fine job of entertaining the crowd. My mate Colin and I thought the guys sounded pretty good and they reminded me somewhat of Turin Brakes.
So on to the main act…wow! From the moment John walked through the crowd to the stage I could sense those in attendance may witness something special at Pivo Pivo on this cold Winter’s night. With it being a Friday, the drinks were free-flowing and by the time John picked-up his guitar the crowd were more than ready for a sing-a-long.
The set-list included solo material and a number of CAST tracks as John dipped into his impressive back-catalogue. The rapturous crowd generated a fantastic atmosphere and as the night progressed John pulled out all the big CAST songs including Alright, Walkaway, Fine Time and Sandstorm from the 1995 album All Change. Fans were also treated to songs from the other fantastic CAST albums Mother Nature Calls and Magic Hour including the big hits Free Me and Guiding Star. For me all of the songs sounded great with John in fine voice and I particularly enjoyed hearing one of my own favourite songs Live the Dream which sounded even better live.
Having never caught John or CAST live before I was absolutely thrilled to have been at this gig and I doubt those in attendance will ever get such a great return for their £9 entry. My congratulations to John Power for a terrific set and also to promoter My First Music for bringing such a renowned artist up to Scotland.
With CAST having a new album out in early 2014 perhaps it will not be that long until we see Mr Power back in Scotland…..now that would good!
