Les Bof (Trio Valore Support) - Edinburgh - Voodoo Rooms - Thursday 30 January 2014
Les who? That was my immediate reaction when I read this was the name of the support act for the Trio Valore gig at the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh. After a bit of surf-based research I discovered Les Bof are actually a French vocals garage beat band consisting of Angus, Colin, Ross and Laurent Mombel who as the name suggests is the French influence on the band. With Laurent self-proclaiming himself as the Principal Singer of the band I was still a bit unsure of what to expect but did not want to spoil the surprise of discovering the sound of the band live in the first instance as opposed to hearing their music through a website (my experience to date is this is never the best way to be introduced to the music of any artist).
So onto the gig! As Les Bof took to the stage it was clear these guys were out to catch the eye and with their sharp suits and flamboyant front-man did this from the off. It was clear these guys knew what they were about and it also became clear that part of the act was the delivery of the vocals in French. Now I must stress this added to the unique blend of music delivered by Les Bof and whilst I did not have any idea what Laurent was singing about I actually thought it sounded great! On stage Laurent was memorising and wasted no time in connecting with the crowd by inviting the audience to get closer to stage. When this did not happen to his full satisfaction Laurent took the show to the floor and pulled off dance moves reminiscent of Prince amongst those in the audience near to the stage.
Interestingly ‘Bof’ means ‘don’t care/not interested’ but with the great sounding music and the highly entertaining Laurent I doubt by the end of this performance there was anyone in the audience with a ‘Bof’ attitude towards these guys.
