Pete MacLeod - Album Launch - Glasgow - ABC2 - Friday 1 Novemeber 2013
After meeting Mr MacLeod at a gig last year and sharing a beer he suggested I check out his music and confidently stated “I think you will like it”! Over the beer, Pete reminisced fondly about his time in California as we talked about LA, San Fran as well as chatting about real music such as Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, the Charlatans, the Roses and Oasis. Pete mentioned he had shared the stage with Bonehead and talked about being at the Roses low-key gig in Paris both of which certainly got my attention. Anyways, I have been keeping a wee eye on him since and over the last year have checked out his Facebook page and listened to a song
or two on YouTube. Pete’s self assured straight talking was right and on checking out his music I found I did indeed like it.
So fast forward about a year from that chance meeting and the social media activity and articles on Pete are on the increase in the lead up to the release of Pete’s album Rolling Stone on Alan McGee’s 359 Music label. With this being the Glasgow album launch and also a Friday night I am somewhat excited as I head to the ABC in Sauchiehall Street to eventually hear if Pete MacLeod can cut it live or not!
Needless to say I am not disappointed and whilst it was nice to hear Pete’s Rolling Stone CD through a stereo and not just a website in the days before the gig I find the man of the moment sounds even better live. Having given the CD a few listens I am familiar with some but not all of the songs as Pete treats the crowd to his songs and storytelling in between. For me there are a few stand-outs…Give A Little Love, On the Other Side, Rolling Stone and my personal favourite Keep Your Dreams Alive. Pete and his band were certainly up for the gig and while the band sounded good it is clear that it is Pete who is the main ticket!
Since the gig, Pete’s Rolling Stone album has been on heavy rotation and Keep Your Dreams Alive, Give a Little Love and Today I Went Swimming are my own favourite tracks. For me the chance meeting last year has lead to another great CD in my collection and I look forward to hearing Pete MacLeod live again in the future.
With some hype around Pete being signed to 359, gigging with Bonehead and supporting Shed Seven at their forthcoming Barrowland gig it appears Pete’s star is on the rise. However, in an era where music charts and TVs so called music stations are polluted with ‘shite’ it is unclear how successful this album will be. One thing is for sure …Pete has an album of great songs, sounds even better live, works hard promoting his music (tweets more than Tim Burgess), engages with his fans and appears a nice guys to boot. Perhaps Pete will fade from the spotlight before the next T in the Park or perhaps he will headline it..the question remains is the glass half-empty or half-full for Pete MacLeod and only time will tell!
If you haven’t already … treat yourself to an early Christmas present and buy a copy of Rolling Stone. I doubt you will be disappointed! Some autographed copies of Rolling Stone are available at:
