Stereophonics - Graffiti on the Train World Tour - Glasgow - Hydro - Friday 8 Novemeber 2013
Granted, the Stereophonics are my favourite band to see live and after hearing great reports about the ‘new’ Hydro, I was really looking forward to this gig and it did not disappoint! After missing the Usher Hall gig earlier in the year (was rockin it up at the Black Crowes that night) I was keen to hear how the songs from Graffiti on the Train sounded live on the big stage.
The Phonics opened up with Catacomb and then kicked straight into the pre Dakota set-closer Local Boy in the Photograph. Being a Friday night the crowd did not need much encouragement and very quickly the crowd were whipped into a frenzy! Next up was Superman (one of my wife’s favourites) and this was followed by We Share the Same Sun from GOTT. For me this song sounded great live and it was followed by 1000 Trees and Tramps Vest (a personal live favourite of my own).
Kelly and the boys then took it down a notch with Maybe Tomorrow and Could you Be the One? The energy levels were then on the rise once again with Vegas Two Times and Bank Holiday Monday being played back-to-back and both sounding great. The crowd
were going ecstatic and Kelly appeared to be enjoying getting Glasgow on their feet!
Kelly continued to introduce the audience to songs from the new album including the hit Indian Summer as well as Violins and Tambourines, Roll the Dice and In a Moment as well as belting out some of the classics…Bar Tender, Mr Writer, and also Traffic (which for me made a very welcome return to the live set).
Been Caught Cheating was also played and as the crowd bellowed out the chorus I thought to myself once again the band missed a trick by not releasing this song as a single from GOTT.
Kelly, Richard, Adam, Jamie and Tony then took a short break before returning to the stage for the encore consisting of a haunting version of I Stopped to Fill my Car Up, Just Looking, Pick a Part and trademark closer Dakota.
Unfortunately that was it…until the next time …and as always my wife and I spent the walk-out of the gig debating what songs we would have added and removed from the set-list. For me personally, I always enjoy Radio and Madame Helga and I still dream about hearing the illusive return of Carrot Cake and Wine whilst my missus enjoys Same size Feet and Moviestar. The hard part is always trying to decide what to remove…HAND? Who knows with so many great tracks who knows how the Phonics decide what to play live? Maybe Rooney gets to choose a song for Manchester?
As always I left the gig feeling like I was honoured to have been there as the Phonics had not only sounded great but looked the part as well in their trademark leather jackets. So my first gig at the Hydro was certainly memorable and there were a few effects throughout the gig…smoke, train tracks and big balloons and a phenomenal band by the name of the Stereophonics! Looking forward to the next time already and envious of Phonics fan Rosie and the 5 gigs she is going to on this tour.
