The View - Falkirk - Warehouse - 19 March 2016
With a nationwide tour next month, Gigslutz Best Band winners The View warm-up with two gigs in Dunfermline and Falkirk. I caught up with them in Falkirk where back in 2007, a secret gig at Warehouse (or The Martell as it was known at the time), erupted into chaos when glass bottles were thrown onto the stage. Tonight there is chaos once again but of the good natured kind with the packed-out crowd singing along almost word for word throughout.
With the Dunfermline gig the night before, The View needed no time to find their groove and kicked into their set with opener ‘Glass Smash’. Fan favourite ‘Grace’ follows and with Pete Reilly letting rip on guitar the foundations of the rejuvenated venue appear to shake. ‘Wasted Little DJs’ and ‘5 Rebeccas’ ensures the already fired up crowd continue to sing-a-along for all their worth as the opening tracks dip heavily into the bands back-catalogue of singles.
The terrific ‘Living’ is the first song to feature from current album Ropewalk while ‘How Long’ with its catchy as f**k melody is an early standout moment. Front-man Kyle Falconer is in fine voice tonight with the band visibly enjoying the response from the crowd. Bare-chested drummer ‘Mo’ catches the eye as he pounds his kit and with ‘Rennie’ on keys adding to the infectious sound of Scotland’s favourite sons; this is band at the top of their game. Bassist Kieren Webster then steps up and takes his turn on lead vocals and unleashes ‘Skag Trendy’ as the place goes nuts.
‘Face For the Radio’ highlights the tender side of the band while ‘Voodoo Doll’ rocks it all out. ‘Same Jeans’ and ‘Superstar Tradesman’ close out the set with the crowd again drowning out the band with their own rendition as the ‘Bairns O’ Falkirk’ go rampant with chants of “The View, The View, The View are on fire” emitting once again from the floor. Perhaps there was set closing version of ‘Tacky Tattoo’ by Kyle but then again perhaps this was just in my head as the euphoria spilled over.
Make no mistake, The View are band on fire who captivate and thrill their live audience with anthemic tunes that are quickly becoming the songs of a generation.
Catch The View on tour throughout April.
